Unwavering Unity: Solidarity Shabbat

In the wake of the October 7th pogrom, our Jewish community stood in solidarity with Israel during a special Shabbat held on the subsequent Friday. Despite the challenges and uncertainties that loomed, the spirit of unity prevailed as a diverse congregation gathered for a memorable evening of prayers, reflection, and communal strength.

A Prayerful Start:

We commenced with a poignant lineup of prayers and readings. The community came together to pray for the hostages, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and the Israeli Government. As news of the global day of rage called by Hamas spread, the prayers took on an added intensity, reflecting the collective concern and compassion for those directly affected by the recent events.

Mini-Yizkor and National Anthem:

The evening progressed with a mini-Yizkor, a memorial prayer, to honor and remember the lives lost during the recent tragic events. This moment of reflection provided an opportunity for the community to come together in grief and support. The Shabbat service reached its emotional peak as everyone joined in singing the Israeli National Anthem, Hatikvah, reaffirming a commitment to hope and resilience in the face of adversity.

A Gathering of Many:

As the night unfolded, an increasing number of people arrived, creating a sense of solidarity and strength that filled the space. Despite concerns about potential risks associated with the global day of rage, the turnout was nothing short of electrifying. Chairs had to be continually set up to accommodate the growing crowd, underscoring the determination of the Jewish community in Taiwan to stand united.

Defiance in the Face of Fear:

The backdrop of mourning and fear did not deter the community; instead, it fueled a collective resolve. The Solidarity with Israel Shabbat became a powerful testament to the unwavering spirit of the Jewish people, even in a distant land like Taiwan. The commitment to gather, pray, and stand together echoed the sentiment that acts of terror will not diminish the resilience of the global Jewish community.

Sublime Singing and Shared Resilience:

The Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma'ariv services that followed were marked by sublime singing, creating an atmosphere of shared spirituality and strength. The harmonious melodies resonated through the air, a testament to the community's ability to find solace and connection through shared rituals and prayers. Whether our language was Hebrew, English, or Chinese, we all sang in the holy language of Hebrew.

Nourishing Body and Spirit:

After the prayers, the community came together for a delicious communal meal, symbolizing not only the nourishment of the body but also the spirit. The act of sharing a meal in the face of adversity further strengthened the bonds within the community, fostering a sense of togetherness that transcended the challenges of the moment.

Conclusion:

The Solidarity with Israel Shabbat held in Taipei was a profound expression of unity, resilience, and defiance in the face of adversity. As the Jewish community came together to pray, remember, and share a communal meal, the message was clear: even in the darkest times, the spirit of solidarity and hope prevails. This special Shabbat served as a beacon of light, reminding us all that, no matter the distance, the Jewish people remain united and steadfast in their commitment to each other and to a brighter future.
